RAILWAY BYPASS AROUND CITY OF NIŠ
Upgrading of the existing and construction of new railway line around city of Niš which has huge importance for the civil society and economic development of the whole area.
City of Niš is located in the place where Corridor X splits in to the two branches, towards Bulgaria and Greece. The railway line is passing through the city center and part of the railway line between Niš and Bulgarian border is the only part of the Corridor X in Serbia which is not electrified. Construction of the railway bypass ensures removing of freight transport from the city center. The main effect is separation of passenger traffic from freight traffic on the access railway section to the city - release of the city central zone of freight traffic which would reduce damaging influences, pollution and noise levels.
Total length of new railway bypass is 22.4km. Three new bypass stations are designed: Niš Sever, Pantelej and Vrežina, and one temporary junction point Prosek which will be removed when railway is finished and section Niš-Dimitrovgrad is electrified.
This new railway track will increase speed, reduce traveling time of transit trains and also reduce duration for technological operations at stations.
